Interceding Spirit

I’m seeing this as a win-win-win situation.  Sometimes we don’t know what to pray for.  And sometimes we pray and we feel like our prayers don’t make sense.  And sometimes we feel heavy and not right about things and we don’t pray – we just feel heavy.  And God knows.  And he helps…

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

(Romans 8:26-27)

I am not very good at prayer.  My 90 year old Nana was telling me how she prays for our whole family every day and how she prays for the others who live in the care residence with her… she would say she isn’t very good at prayer, yet she is so super consistent and faithful, with a heart of love and compassion, that I would say she is a rock star at prayer.  We are all different, and we all need help in our weakness.

Eloquence is overrated, yet many of us think we lack it.  Consistency is a virtue, yet many of us struggle with it.  I’m so thankful that God’s love and care for me cuts through my crap and he shores me up when I fall short.  God knows the language of Heaven, so when I am speaking the language of the world, or human wisdom, or when I am not even speaking to him at all, the Spirit keeps interceding for me.

God searches our hearts.  Reminds me of 1 Chronicles 28:9, where we read, “for the LORD searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought.”  And the Father knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for us in accordance with the will of God.  Holy Wow.

So the prayers the Spirit prays for me are consistent with the will of God for me… Even when I am not focused on the will of God for me.

He knows my heart and if my heart is lined up with God’s, the Spirit is interceding and pushing my heart’s desire forward in God’s throne-room.  Win.  And if my heart is not aimed at the same target as God’s, the Spirit intercedes based on God’s will, which helps me to get on God’s agenda.  Win.

Spirit of God, speak for me.
Speak to me.
Work in me.
Intercede for me.
Bring me in line with that precious will of God…

Amen.
