Can you imagine a place on earth where Christmas is not known? Santa? Presents? These stories are pervasive in our media and marketing culture. Even Christmas’ true meaning is far reaching. Psalm 98 says the ends of the earth will see His salvation… Jesus!
1 Sing to the Lord a new song,
for he has done marvelous things;
his right hand and his holy arm
have worked salvation for him.
2 The Lord has made his salvation known
and revealed his righteousness to the nations.
3 He has remembered his love
and his faithfulness to Israel;
all the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation of our God.
4 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth,
burst into jubilant song with music;
5 make music to the Lord with the harp,
with the harp and the sound of singing,
6 with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn—
shout for joy before the Lord, the King.
7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it.
8 Let the rivers clap their hands,
let the mountains sing together for joy;
9 let them sing before the Lord,
for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
and the peoples with equity.
Psalm 98 reminds me of Christmas. Christmas is about the marvelous things God has done in working salvation for all people. Glad tidings and great joy for all nations.
Revealed in the Christmas story is Christ Jesus, born in humble beginnings, yet incarnated for our salvation. God remembered his promises to his people Israel, from the beginning of their nation, to provide salvation for them.
The Passover Lamb represents Jesus – he is our unblemished, sacrificial lamb. The Lamb of God, John the Baptist calls him. And Jesus’ advent was seen from afar by Eastern Kings (Magi). Now 2000 years later, it is hard to imagine whether there is a place on earth which has not heard the Christmas story.
All the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God. Jesus promised this himself (Mark 13:10).
The psalmist responds to these truths with worship.
Shout for joy to the Lord.
Worship Christ the newborn King.
Let all creation respond.
He will judge with equity.
He is our King.
He is salvation.
