Light Darkness Tension

I follow the light of the world.  And so I should never walk in darkness again, by Jesus’ words.  I have the light of life.  Hmmm… then how come I continue to fall into darkness? It’s like it’s behind a trip wire on the path of life!  Walk in the light where Jesus is…

12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12

19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
John 3:19-21

I try to walk in the light and I try to walk in his ways.  Yet whether darkness is knocking on my door or whether I am knocking on its door, I can’t seem to shake it.

The Apostle Paul speaks of how he can’t separate from the body of death that he drags around (Romans 7).  And in Galatians 3 he explains that the Spirit and our flesh do battle with each other.  The result is that sometimes we struggle to stay in the light.  And when we slip into darkness, we hate the light.  What?

How could we hate the light?  Jesus is the light.  Well, Jesus explains in John 3 that those who practice evil don’t want to be exposed, and therefore they reject (hate) the light.  Falling back into darkness puts us in the position of rejecting God, which we never want to do as followers of Jesus.

Paul encourages us: “Do not give the devil a foothold,” (Ephesians 4:27).  Rick Warren says that when we give the devil a foothold, he takes a stronghold.  Rick explains that anger, worry, and resentment are all examples of footholds which can turn into strongholds.  He encourages (from Ephesians 4) to deal with these things right away.

If we find ourselves out of the light, the best thing to do is walk back into the light.  That’s where Jesus is. That’s where his rest is.  That’s where his guidance is.  That’s where his healing is.  Don’t listen to the voice telling you to be ashamed or silent.  That’s the devil trying to turn the foothold into a stronghold.

Walk in the light.
