Glory and Love

As Jesus ascended back to heaven after his resurrection, we are left as his presence in the world.  He lives through our lives, and our lives are to be full of love.  Love God.  Love your neighbour.  How is your love life?  Does it reflect the glory of God present on earth?

24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
John 17:24-26

Jesus prayed for our protection in the world, and he prayed for our unity.  Today we see that he desires for us to see his glory – which is given to Jesus by the Father.  Glory is something which is heavenly.  John 1 reveals that we have beheld his glory in the incarnation of Jesus, yet we also know from Philippians 2 that Jesus emptied himself of much of his glory to conform to the body and stature of a human.

The glory of Jesus which we will see in heaven, and in the second coming of Jesus, is greater than we can imagine.  The transfiguration, which Peter, James, and John witnessed, is closer to Jesus’ heavenly glory. I am not sure we can even handle it – we will be like Moses, hiding our eyes as the glory of God passes by us.

Jesus made known the Father to us, teaching his word and completing the Father’s work.  In his final prayer before his arrest, Jesus commits to continue to reveal the Father to us, so that God’s love will be in us and so that Jesus himself will be in us.

Do you sense the presence of Jesus in your life?  Are you full of his love?  I know a couple of negative Nellies who broadcast dissatisfaction and self-focus.  It’s hard to see Jesus in them, yet they would say they know and love Jesus.  Don’t quench the Spirit within you.

As Jesus ascended back to heaven after his resurrection, we are left as his presence in the world.  He lives through our lives, and our lives are to be full of love.  Love God.  Love your neighbour.  How is your love life?  Does it reflect the glory of God present on earth?

Let’s live up to Jesus’ prayer for us…

Amen.
