Overcome or Be Overcome

God is drawing a line down the centre of my life.  Which side do you want to live on?  Will you overcome or be overcome?  Light or darkness?  We have some choices to make.  John paints the picture for us today in his explanation of his letter we know as 1John…

12 I am writing to you, dear children,
because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one.

14 I write to you, dear children,
because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
because you are strong,
and the word of God lives in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.
1John 2:12-14

John stops in chapter 2 of his letter to frame why he is writing.  This occurs right after he makes the inextricable connection between knowing Jesus and living for Jesus.  You cannot know Jesus and not live for Jesus.  It’s hypocritical and it tells people you don’t know the Lord.

So why is John writing?  Because his audience has been forgiven their sins, they know the Lord, and they have overcome the evil one.  They are in the right posture to continue on in Christ and make an impact for him.

Think of this in light of John words thus far.  Don’t say you haven’t sinned.  Confess your sin.  Don’t say you know Christ and then hate your brother.  Love others and walk in the light.

It proves you are his.

If we are trying to influence the world to open their minds and hearts to a relationship with God through Jesus, we need to listen to John’s words.  The alternative is to act like we don’t need forgiveness, let the evil one overcome us in mind and action, and then live for ourselves and show contempt for our neighbours.

I feel that God is drawing a line down the centre of my life.  Which side do you want to live on?  Will you overcome or be overcome?  Light or darkness?  We have some choices to make.

Amen.
