Read the Word, Live the Word

The basis of leaning on God and his wisdom, and building lives which represent his love and faithfulness, starts with and understanding and commitment to God’s word in our lives.  And that will only happen if we spend quality time and quantity time in God’s word.

My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,  for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.  Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.  Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.  Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;  in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.   Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.  This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Proverbs 3:1-8

Psalm 119:11 encourages us to hide the word of God in our hearts so we won’t sin against the Lord.  Solomon says write them on your hearthang them around your neck. How do you keep God’s word and commands always before you?  What is your plan to remember his teaching?  If you don’t have a plan you will surely not succeed in planting his word within you.

Skeptical?

What have you memorized in your life? Let me guess… On a dark desert highway, ___ ___  _ _ ___.  You knew it didn’t you? Your favourite songs, your friends’ names, your times tables?  All by repetition and frequent use or practice.  God’s word is no different.

It seems that the basis of leaning on God and his wisdom, and building lives which represent his love and faithfulness, starts with and understanding and commitment to God’s word in our lives.  We need to read the word to live the word.

There is a contrast between leaning on God and trusting one’s own ways in these proverbs.   Of course, we know which way we lean and it’s not naturally toward the Lord.  To have a good name with God and other people, the wisdom of God inherent in his word and commands is our path. What’s your path?

Love and faithfulness will be our foundation toward a life of good favour with our neighbours.  And truly, if we desire to influence them toward leaning on the God we lean on, our friends and neighbours will need to see the witness of our commitment to living out the principles of goodness, love, and faithfulness to God.

Amen.
