Firstfruits of Honour

Firstfruits is the idea that when we honour God with our wealth, we ought to do it as a first thought and not a last thought.  This is a God-honouring idea which follows from the belief that all wealth comes from God and when we give to God we are giving back to him.

Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;  then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
Proverbs 3:9-10

Honour and firstfruits: these are important concepts in the economy of God. The world’s idea of finances is based on ‘what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is yours,’ and if my heart is stirred I might also share with the charity I like.

Two new ideas for us today: first, start intentionally honouring God with our wealth.  Why? Because our ability to generate any wealth at all (and I don’t mean riches – just financial resources) comes from God.  David’s song of celebration when the people give toward the building of the temple in 1Chronicles 29:12-14 sets the stage.

He reminds everyone that all wealth comes from God and that when we give to God we are giving back to him. We give some of the blessings of God back to the source of the blessing.  He also points out that we give out of humility. “Who am I?” David asks God. Who are we to be included in the work of God?  We are not required and our resources are a drop in the bucket of the One who owns it all.

This leads us to the humble place of being thankful that we can honour God by contributing to his purpose and plan in the world.  Whether we support foreign mission work or local support groups for special needs, when we serve those needs and support such efforts, Jesus says we are actually supporting him (Matthew 25:40).

The second big idea of these verses in Proverbs 3 is the idea of firstfruits. This means that when we honour God with our wealth, we ought to do it as a first thought and not a last thought.  Honouring God shouldn’t be second or third on our priority list.  It should be first.

We show who and what is most important in our lives in the priorities we set. We can easily place our families, spouses, boyfriends, girlfriends, careers, and recreation before God.  Today we are challenged to reset our priorities to give the firstfruits of our honour to God through giving to him.

Amen.
