One-A-Day Wisdom Vitamin

Wisdom puts us in good stead with God.  Our earthly fortunes may come and go, yet God’s reward for the wise and prudent is an inheritance which is lasting.  Spiritual gold. Do you want it?  Maybe start reading Proverbs – with 31 chapters they’re like a one-a-day vitamin.

32 “Now then, my children, listen to me;
blessed are those who keep my ways.
33 Listen to my instruction and be wise;
do not disregard it.
34 Blessed are those who listen to me,
watching daily at my doors,
waiting at my doorway.
35 For those who find me find life
and receive favor from the Lord.
36 But those who fail to find me harm themselves;
all who hate me love death.”
Proverbs 8:32-36

You really need to read the entire text of Proverbs 8 if you want to get the most out of this.  This is the proverb on wisdom and understanding and prudence.  Wisdom calls out on the highest part of the road.  She calls out at the city gate.  This is life-changing, over-arching, all-consuming, ever-informing wisdom.

Some people have interpreted Proverbs 8 as referring to Jesus as wisdom personified.  Don’t get caught up in that idea. Verse 22 reveals that wisdom as brought forth by God as his first work of creation.  Jesus is not created.  Jesus, according to Colossians 1, did the creating.  And so Jesus is the author of wisdom, not the created-wisdom-personified.

Wisdom is greater than fine gold and all wealth and prosperity.  I have said to my kids that if they get the choice to be smart or lucky, choose lucky.  It’s a joke that refers to how things sometimes roll in the world.  The smart folks don’t always appear the luckiest.  Others might say that smart and hustle added together make lucky.  Whatever…

Wisdom puts us in good stead with God.  Our earthly fortunes may come and go, yet God’s reward for the wise and prudent is an inheritance which is lasting.

Spiritual gold…

I want this favour from God.  I want to find God and listen to his instruction.  Don’t you?  Do you know where to find it?  Maybe start with the Proverbs.  You can read the whole book in a month.  31 chapters and you can read one a day.  Try the God vitamin. One a day. It will change your life.

Amen.
