Asleep in the Bow Faith

When someone is really good at what they do, we sometimes say they could do it in their sleep.  They don’t even need to wake up to be proficient.  Jesus is that guy.  In fact, Jesus has your life and needs all under control even while he sleeps in the bow of your boat…

One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.  The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
Luke 8:22-25

Jesus is so sure of his ability to keep us safe and watch over us that he can sleep on the job.  As the disciples travel across the lake with Jesus, we can bet that he knows what is coming.  A storm kicks up after Jesus falls asleep in the bow of the boat.  In fact, it wasn’t just any old storm – it was such a large storm that the disciples were in great danger.

Jesus was sleeping while his disciples were in great danger.  Do you think he does that when we are in great danger?  Truth is that Jesus isn’t sleeping anymore.  He is seated at the right hand of the Father and he is interceding for us even now.  So he isn’t sleeping, yet he could be.  Why?  Because even is his sleep the Lord has you covered.  He can handle it in his sleep.

You see, we serve the God of the winds and the water.  He has authority over the elements and their power is his power.  Jesus spoke to the storm and it subsided. His words were enough.  This shouldn’t surprise us because he spoke the world into existence (Psalm 33:9). A storm is a blip on God’s radar, even though it might rock our world…

What’s rocking your world today?  Do you recognize that God has power over it?  Jesus challenges he followers for their little faith.  How little is your faith?  Or is it big enough to trust that God has everything under control?

I’m not saying that we shouldn’t pray and bring our needs before God, yet we want to do so in a manner which demonstrates that we trust God and have confidence in his power over everything and his love for us.

Amen.
