Never Too Late For Compassion

God provides for us, satisfying our needs according to his kindness and generosity.  And still sometimes we forget God.  Today God wants us to know that there is always a way back.  It’s not too late: God is there and he is waiting to show you love and compassion…

4 “But I have been the Lord your God
ever since you came out of Egypt.
You shall acknowledge no God but me,
no Savior except me.
5 I cared for you in the wilderness,
in the land of burning heat.
6 When I fed them, they were satisfied;
when they were satisfied, they became proud;
then they forgot me.

1 Return, Israel, to the Lord your God.
Your sins have been your downfall!
2 Take words with you
and return to the Lord.
Say to him:
“Forgive all our sins
and receive us graciously,
that we may offer the fruit of our lips.

3 We will never again say ‘Our gods’
to what our own hands have made,
for in you the fatherless find compassion.”
Hosea 13:4-6, 14:1-2, 3

Satisfied, proud, and forgetful.  That’s the pattern of behaviour which was repeated over and over in the story of Israel, and it plays out in our lives also.  God provides for us, satisfying our needs according to his kindness and generosity.  And out of that satisfaction, we find a way to then feel proud, like we had something to do with God meeting our needs.  From the place of satisfied pride comes a forgetful heart toward God.

Hosea encourages Israel in these verses to return to the Lord and ask God for forgiveness.  When we realize how we have turned toward the things our hands have made instead of staying with the God who made us, we need to turn back to God.  This could happen five times this week.  Keep returning to God.  Why?

Because in him the fatherless find compassion.  God cares deeply for those who are in need.  He will be there for you in your time of need.  He will lift you up or lead you out or protect you where you are.  He is the God who cares for each of us more than we care for ourselves.  He made us and is our Father and desires for us to reflect his own attributes in the world.

Don’t feel like you have no way back. Don’t feel like it’s too late for you to turn toward him.  God is there and he is waiting to show you love and compassion.  We all need it… today.

Amen.
