If you want to know where George Lucas got his Jedi Mind Trick idea, look no further. “These aren’t the drones you’re looking for…” is the famous line, yet the original was uttered by Elisha the prophet: “This is not the road and this is not the city…”
11 [The king of Aram] summoned his officers and demanded of them, “Tell me! Which of us is on the side of the king of Israel?”
12 “None of us, my lord the king,” said one of his officers, “but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.”
13 “Go, find out where he is,” the king ordered, “so I can send men and capture him.” The report came back: “He is in Dothan.” 14 Then he sent horses and chariots and a strong force there. They went by night and surrounded the city.
15 When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked.
16 “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
17 And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
18 As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, “Strike this army with blindness.” So he struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked.
19 Elisha told them, “This is not the road and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will lead you to the man you are looking for.” And he led them to Samaria.
It angered the king of Aram that Elisha was tipping off the king of Israel to keep the people of God safe from attack. God was providing Elisha with the ‘intel’ and Elisha was passing it on. So the king of Aram found out where Elisha was and hunted him down.
We can see that once blinded by the Lord, Elisha was able to tell them, “This is not the road and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will lead you to the man you are looking for.” Elisha’s mind trick far pre-dated Obi Wan’s Jedi Mind Trick.
The force is nothing compared to The Force: The Lord God Almighty will protect his people for his purposes and plans. And this leads us to the real truth of this story. The trick of leading armies astray saved the day, yet Elisha was never worried about being surrounded.
Do you find yourself struggling with fear and doubt and worry? If so, check out the ‘back-up’ you have as a child of God: “the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
The armies of God are all around us.
We do not walk into any situation in which God is not already there. If we need his help, he will give his angels the job of watching over us:
9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands…
Who is your refuge? When you face trouble, if you try to muster your own strength, you have reason to worry and tremble. If you, like Elisha, take your refuge in Almighty God, you will be surrounded by his horses and chariots of fire.
Where is the source of your courage and strength today?
