Following Magi

Will you make room for Jesus in your heart so that he receives every moment of glory and adoration tonight? I sometimes feel we are still edging Jesus out to the margin and leaving no room for him at the inn.  Today the Magi remind us of the proper heart of worship…

9 [The Magi] went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Matthew 2:9-11

Tonight we celebrate Christmas Eve.   This is the night in which Mary and Joseph went looking for a place to stay because the baby was coming and they were in Bethlehem to register for the census, having journeyed from Nazareth back to Joseph’s hometown.  There was, of course, no room at the inn.  We remember that they ended up in a stable because the earthly beginnings of Jesus’ life were to be as humble as anyone could imagine.

A star shone brightly in the east and the Magi saw it and began their two-year journey, perhaps even that night, to come and see the new-born king.  How far would you go tonight to celebrate Jesus’ birth?  Some of us choose the church service we will attend tonight based on the convenience of our schedules.  Which church can get me back to my family event in time?  Which is closest to where I am going?

What a contrast.

We are still edging Jesus out to the margin.  If there was no room for him at the inn 2000 years ago, how much room is there tonight in our schedules?  How far and to what extent will we go to worship the new-born king?  Are you overjoyed tonight to find and worship Jesus?

The Magi were overjoyed when they saw the star of Jesus.  When they finally found him, they ‘bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts.’  All attention – all eyes – all hearts – all adoration was on Jesus.  The things which the Magi treasured they laid at his feet.

What do you treasure tonight and are you willing to lay it all at the King’s feet?  Will you make room for Jesus in your heart and life so that he takes first place and all the spotlight and every moment of glory and adoration today?

Let us adore him, even as the Magi did…

Merry Christmas.
