Today we are challenged to consider our spiritual maturity and our pursuit of God. When passion fades, resolve needs to rise. This is true in all relationships. Even if you have been around the block you can grow more in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus. Seek him!
We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of Godʼs word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity…
Hebrews 5:11-14, 6:1
Are you still trying to understand? Notice that the reasons for people not maturing and developing a mature understanding of spiritual things are two-fold: people stop trying to understand and they stop using the word of God constantly…
Drops the mic.
Are we done here yet? Need to say any more? We want the blessings and peace and even the recognition of mature faith, yet after the honeymoon, do we stop digging in and pursuing God?
My story of young faith parallels many who follow Jesus as adults. We are so excited to have found the hope of Christ that we throw ourselves into every form of exposure to the things of God. I listened to sermons on the radio, read devotional books, studied the Bible, and attended every church service. It was as close to 247 Jesus following as I could get.
That’s how many of us start. That’s why it’s like a honeymoon. It’s 100℅ passion. And passion fades. It comes and it goes. When it’s on, it’s on, yet when it’s gone, it’s really gone. When passion fades, resolve needs to rise. That’s the reality in marriage and that’s the reality in our relationships with God.
Have you resolved to pursue Jesus in your life even when your passion fades?
We have to keep trying to understand the things of God and keep seeking God in his word to mature through our constant use of the Bible. I know. That’s not spiritually sexy is it? It’s not on social media. It’s not click bait competing for your attention. It’s old-fashioned. It’s pure. It’s hard work. And it’s worth it…
Do some self-reflection. Should you be more mature in Christ than you are? By this point in your faith journey should you be further down the road? Should you be on solid food, yet you are still on milk?
If so, what will you do about it? My eyes are still opening to greater understanding of the scriptures after 28 years of following Jesus. Even if you have been around the block you can grow more in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus.
