One Death, One Eternity

After we pass over into eternity, we cannot change the course of our eternity.  So use the time you have to influence your eternity.  Are you living expectantly for the return of Jesus?  He is coming back to bring eternal life for those waiting for him…

27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
Hebrews 9:27-28

One death.  That’s it.  We only get to die once and after that we face judgement.  We will still have life.  Eternity is a conscious place.  And once we pass over the threshold of life into death and into eternity, we cannot go back to relive our days on earth.  No second chances.  No nine lives.

There is a truth here that shouldn’t escape those who sit on the fence about the things of God.  After we pass over into eternity, we cannot change the course of our eternity.  The ideas of purgatory or reincarnation are not supported in God’s word to us on life and death and eternity.  One death and then judgement.  So use the time you have now to influence the eternity you will spend after death.

Jesus died once also.  And similar to how people die once, Jesus only died once, with his sacrifice taking away our sins.  That act was only required once (unlike the sacrifices of old testament priests, which were ongoing). Jesus is alive, however, and he will appear a second time, not to relive life, but rather to proclaim victory and bring eternal salvation for those who believe upon him.

So what are you waiting for? I ask this in two ways.  What are you waiting for in terms of dealing with matters of life and death and eternity?  There is crystal clear truth here: you will die and you will die once.  There is no time like the present to consider our mortality and our eternal future.

Secondly, are you waiting for Jesus?  If you have your hope in him for salvation because of what he did for us in his death and resurrection, then you will be waiting for him to come back.  Are you living expectantly for the return of Jesus?  He will bring eternal life for those who are waiting for him.

What are you waiting for today?

Amen.
