Resurrection Hope

When the women came from the empty tomb, their words seemed like nonsense. Do you hope in the power of God or the power of humanity? If there was no resurrection, there is no Christian God.  If Jesus is not risen, our faith is useless and we rely only on ourselves…

1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them,

“Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen!

Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” 8 Then they remembered his words.

9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.
Luke 24:1-11

They did not believe the women because their words seemed to them like nonsense.  Is that what you think of the resurrection of Jesus?  Where is your thinking on this great story of hope and power?  Do you believe in the resurrection? Do you hope in the power of God or in the power of humanity?

Without the resurrection, there is no hope in the Christian God.  If there was no resurrection, there is no Christian God.  The hope of the Christian faith is in the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.  Paul reveals that if we hope in Christ (1Corinthians 15:14) and if he is not raised from the dead, our preaching is useless and so is our faith.

We will be left with our own human power, which we know leaves us short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). In fact, Paul continues in 1Corinthians 15:17-18, if Jesus is not raised, we are still in our sins and those who have already died are lost forever.  In this terrible situation, we might say there is some hope somehow that might result in our promise of heaven, whether by good works or balance of scales (these are human hopes based on human effort).

Talk about nonsense…

The idea that we can be good enough for the all good and all glorious Lord Almighty is harder to believe than the resurrection. Just reflect on your last week and your successes and failures living up to God’s standards.  Without Jesus, could you be good enough.  I could not.

The angels asked, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?” I might ask why would we look for a hope of eternal life among the spiritually dead (ourselves)?  We will not find it.

He is risen.

Consider Jesus.  Consider the resurrection.  Consider the power of God which is able to resurrect you and your life to glory…
