Good Shepherd’s Care

The comfort and hope from idols and false visions and dreams is vain and empty.  Why do we hope in these empty promises?  Only Jesus leads us to the abundant life of God our Father.  He is the Good Shepherd and Father God wants us to be under his care!

2 The idols speak deceitfully,
diviners see visions that lie;
they tell dreams that are false,
they give comfort in vain.
Therefore the people wander like sheep
oppressed for lack of a shepherd.

3 “My anger burns against the shepherds,
and I will punish the leaders;
for the Lord Almighty will care
for his flock, the people of Judah,
and make them like a proud horse in battle.
4 From Judah will come the cornerstone,
from him the tent peg,
from him the battle bow,
from him every ruler.
Zechariah 10:2-4

Idols and diviners lead the people of God astray to the point that they are like sheep without a shepherd. They are deceptive and their promises are false.  The comfort and hope from idols and false vision is vain and empty.

Remember that in John 10:10 Jesus said that the thief comes to kill and to destroy, and that Jesus comes to give life abundant.  The false hope of created idols and fortune-telling cannot compare to the abundant life of Jesus.  These things only lead to destruction because they lead us away from Jesus and truth.

Only Jesus leads us to the abundant life of God our Father.

Now consider what happens when the leaders of God’s people shepherd them down false paths.  Can the sheep have hope if the leaders direct them toward falsehood?  And still, God has a plan to shepherd his flock.  We see here in Zechariah that he will step in and care for his flock.  God will rebuild them into a people strong like a proud horse in battle.

From Judah will come the cornerstone, the tent-peg, and the battle bow.  Could this be Jesus?  In the face of poor and lacking shepherding, Jesus is our Good Shepherd. In the face of false religion that exalts self-righteousness or human dreams, Jesus provides hope based in God’s promise.

Where is your life and your hope today?  Are you being led by no shepherd or a false shepherd?  Are you holding up dreams which are human in origin and not from God? God has provided the cornerstone for us.  God has provided a Good Shepherd for us. God’s anger burns against false shepherds, and we should walk cautiously behind such leaders, lest we wander from God or worse – become a false shepherd to someone else.

Put yourself under the Lord’s shepherding care today.

Amen.
