The Real Boss

Today we see that God establishes leadership in our lives and that our leaders are accountable to God. Are you submitting willingly to your leader? When we don’t respect and support our leaders, we are modelling complete lack of respect for God…

17 Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.
Hebrews 13:17

1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
Romans 13:1-2

Do you like your boss? Maybe that isn’t the most important question.  Maybe the better question is are you submitting willingly to your leader?  Are you on-side with them or pushing back and undermining at every turn?  Sure, there is middle ground, yet quite often we view leaders over us as The Man, and we have an underlying desire to stick it to the man…

God is sovereign, and this includes his authority over your work environment and who is in authority over you.  God establishes leadership and our leaders are accountable to God for the way they watch over their employees.  In view of these truths, what should change in terms of your relationship with the boss?

Our challenge today is to have confidence in and submission toward our leaders, so that their work is a joy. We shouldn’t want our leaders’ work to be a burden on them.  That would be of no benefit to us.  Well, that’s true. If we make life difficult for the boss, we likely find life is difficult for us.  If you suffer from stick-it-to-the-man-eosis, you can expect that you will have the unfavourable tasks in your job jar.  That’s the practical side of this equation.

The higher level issue is that when we don’t respect and support our leaders, we are showing a lack of respect for God, who put those leaders in place over us. We don’t just bring the wrath of the boss on ourselves when we rebel.  We bring God’s judgement upon us when we stick it to the man.

Adjust your attitude: If God placed this leader over you, how can you serve and respect God in your relationship with the boss?  And what example can you set for others in your workplace by demonstrating a healthy respect for management?  Think about it this way: your real boss is the Lord!

Every area of our lives are under the microscope of those who are considering whether to follow Jesus… based on our example.  Honour God by honouring your leaders.
