That Day – Today

Let God’s kingdom come into your life even today, so that in your world, there is one Lord and only one name of glory.  Call out for God’s rescue – he sent his son Jesus into the world to rescue all of us, and he will come with his holy ones to save you…

1 A day of the Lord is coming, Jerusalem…

5 The Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

6 On that day there will be neither sunlight nor cold, frosty darkness. 7 It will be a unique day—a day known only to the Lord—with no distinction between day and night. When evening comes, there will be light.

8 On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter.

9 The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name.
Zechariah 14:1, 5-9

This prophecy of Zechariah’s is very specific, and there are differing opinions regarding the fulfillment of this vision.  I am not going to add to that discussion.  Rather, I wish to reflect on the Lord coming to the rescue of his people.  The imagery here reminds me of the images of Revelation.

The description of the day includes statements of 24 hour a day light, which is what will be when Jesus is the lamp of heaven. The living water sounds like the river which will flow out from the throne of God and of the Lamb.  This day is only known to the Lord.

On that day, the Lord will be king over the whole earth: one Lord, and his name the only name.

Part of the purpose of prophecy is to show us the future, yet part of the purpose is also to convict us of how things are now.  When the Lord comes to rescue his children, they will be under attack which is brutal and severe.

I would hope that we will not see such attack in our lives, yet I know some of us have been there or we are there now.  Call out for God’s rescue.  Ask him to bring his holy ones to your rescue.

Hope in God as the one who is king over the whole earth.  Let his kingdom come in your life even today, so that in your world, there is one Lord and only one name of glory.

For the God who rescued his people from Pharaoh, the God who defeated the Midianites with 300 soldiers led by Gideon, the God who preserved Daniel from obedience to idols and false gods to serve the living God – that God can rescue you.

That God sent his son Jesus into the world to rescue all of us so that we can have eternal life with him on that day. On that day.  May we welcome that day today.  May his kingdom be now.

Amen.
