Humble Temple Built

Who are we to be indwelt by Almighty God?  And what temple could hold the power and the glory of the Almighty? Isn’t it amazing that God chooses to live in us because we are left here on earth with the purpose and mission to share God’s love with our world?

1 Solomon gave orders to build a temple for the Name of the Lord…

5 “The temple I am going to build will be great, because our God is greater than all other gods. 6 But who is able to build a temple for him, since the heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain him? Who then am I to build a temple for him, except as a place to burn sacrifices before him?
2Chronicles 2:1, 5-6

19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
1Corinthians 6:19-20

Solomon, in his incredible wisdom, notes that the highest heavens cannot contain God.  The temple of God should be great, because we serve the true and living God, yet what temple could hold the power and the glory of the Almighty?

And who is Solomon, that he should have the honour and privilege to build a temple to the Lord?  Solomon approaches the things of God with humility and reverence.  Who am I?

Who are we to come before God?  When we offer our worship, do we have the reverence of heart that Solomon had on this day? The creative power and strength of God we have seen is only a whisper of his awesome nature.  Do we underestimate God and treat him with cavalier hearts bound by human and earthly ideas?  God is too great to be contained in earthen temples…

Why, then, does God choose to dwell within us?  Our bodies are his temple as God ushers in his new covenant.  We are God’s people and he is our God.  His teaching and will are on our hearts by his Holy Spirit.

Might we consider having reverence in how we treat God’s presence within us in keeping with Solomon’s humble reverence in his day.  Who are we to be indwelt by Almighty God?

Yet God chooses us because we are left here on this earth with the purpose and mission to share his power and grace and love with our world.

Therefore, honour God…

Amen.
