Look to the One

Where you at? Are you preparing to fight battles against formidable foes under human strength? Or do you look to the One? Do you recognize that you need God now, more than ever? He is waiting. He is listening. To see if you will call to the One who loves you…

5 The Lord, the Lord Almighty, has a day
of tumult and trampling and terror
in the Valley of Vision,
a day of battering down walls
and of crying out to the mountains.
6 Elam takes up the quiver,
with her charioteers and horses;
Kir uncovers the shield.
7 Your choicest valleys are full of chariots,
and horsemen are posted at the city gates.

8 The Lord stripped away the defenses of Judah,
and you looked in that day
to the weapons in the Palace of the Forest.
9 You saw that the walls of the City of David
were broken through in many places;
you stored up water in the Lower Pool.
10 You counted the buildings in Jerusalem
and tore down houses to strengthen the wall.
11 You built a reservoir between the two walls
for the water of the Old Pool,
but you did not look to the One who made it,
or have regard for the One who planned it long ago.
Isaiah 22:5-11

At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord.
Genesis 4:26

You did not look to the One who made it, or have regard for the One who planned it long ago. The people of Jerusalem were readying for attack from Elam, and we can see all the human effort they bring the bear to stop the invasion. God is not amused. He knows this will happen. In fact, he is making the invasion possible to show his people that they have abandoned him and have gone their own way.

And sure enough, the people live up to their billing. They do not call upon God. They do not have regard for the One who can save them.

This is the opposite of what happens in Genesis 4:26, where after the episode of Cain and Abel, we see that people begin “to call on the name of the Lord.” They come to realize who they need. It’s the opposite here. People are ignoring the One who can save them from themselves…

Where you at? Are you preparing to fight battles against formidable foes under human strength? Or do you look to the One? Have you reached a place where looking to God is a thing of the past and now you look only to yourself? Or do you recognize that you need God now, more than ever?

Have you seen what happens in your life and in the lives of the Cains and Abels around you, such that you are ready to call upon the name of the Lord?

He is waiting. He is watching. He is listening. To see if you will call to the One. To see if you will look to the One. Will you have regard for the One who has had regard for you? God gave his only son Jesus to live and die and rise again for you.

Call upon his name.

Amen.
