Passing on the Faithful

Today I look forward 30 years at my future impact. I saw one of my spiritual parents this week who shared Christ with me 30 years ago. As we reminisced, I was inspired by his hope in God and love for others to pour that into others based on his example…

11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
Romans 12:11-12

These verses are perfect for today. I saw Mario this week. Mario is one of my spiritual parents. He had a key role in my life as a young man. I worked in Mario’s restaurant and he used to share the gospel with me. He would ask me to come out of the kitchen down the hall to his office to share a scripture with me. Or when he was working in the kitchen on Wednesdays he would talk about God and life with me in the middle of the action.

That was 30 years ago. I thanked him again for sharing the gospel with me. I thanked him and his wife Brenda for picking Lucy up on the way to church every Sunday to make sure she kept coming. Brenda shared that the day Lucy walked forward in church to receive Jesus as her Saviour, Brenda was in the choir, tears streaming down her face as Karen walked forward. Such love. For God. And for us.

Because Mario and Brenda shared with us, we shared Christ with our kids. They are now trusting God for their lives and future. And then Mario hit me with a kicker… he said, “I still pray for you guys.” He sees Lucy’s Dad, and every time he sees him, he prays for us. After 30 years.

Faithful in prayer.

Mario is truly never lacking in zeal, he has kept his spiritual fervor, and he serves the Lord. His example spurs me on to aspire to his level of commitment. How many lives has God impacted through him?

We talked of heaven. Mario said we are all going to be there together. What a joyful hope. And then Mario shared some of his affliction with me. We all have it. God allows us to experience both the joys and afflictions of life. That we can both rejoice in and rely upon Him.

Today is my turn to be faithful in prayer for him. And to share my life and story and the gospel of Jesus with those around me. For the next 30 years.

Thank you God, for Mario and Brenda.

Amen.
