Imperishable, Immortal, Spiritual Life

Find your immortality in Jesus – he defeated sin and death for you! In Jesus, God dealt with our need through divine intervention. When we believe Jesus for our forgiveness from our sin, we are clothed with the imperishable, immortal, spiritual life!

44 If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. 46 The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. 47 The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven. 48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.

50 I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

55 “Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1Corinthians 15:44-50, 53-57

Remember when Nicodemus the religious leader came to Jesus at night in John 3? Jesus told him that, “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit… You must be born again.” Today we can understand even more about Jesus’ words as we read here that there are both natural and spiritual bodies.

We bear the image of Adam in our flesh. That comes first. We are born into this world physically alive, yet not spiritually. We have spirits. We have souls. And our souls are eternal. That doesn’t make them spiritually alive, however. Spiritual birth comes as we believe on Jesus as the one lifted up on the cross for our sin (John 3:14-15).

When we believe Jesus for our forgiveness from our sin, we (the perishable and natural and mortal) are clothed with the imperishable, immortal, spiritual life which flows to us in the Spirit of God. When this happens, we take on the image of the heavenly man – Jesus.

Notice that these ideas run counter to any concept or idea that in our natural and mortal state we can be good enough for God or achieve eternal life. Heaven is not for those who are good enough. Heaven is for those who are spiritually alive.

We can see the power of this truth in verse 54: when we are clothed with immortality, death is swallowed up in victory. Hallelujah! Death has no sting if we are bearing the image of Christ Jesus and clothed with spiritual life. This is the victory of Jesus. Not us.

Are you trying to reach spiritual connection or enlightenment or achieve acceptance with God on your own merits in the physical world? Consider that God’s way is different. His path is spiritual. In Jesus, God dealt with our need through divine intervention.

Find your immortality in the one who defeated sin and death for you – Jesus!

Amen.
