Guatemala X: Keep On Keeping On

The Lord wants us to be strong and courageous in the face of adversity, not because of ourselves, but because of his presence and power within us. With God, all things are possible. We need to keep on keeping on in faith and trust in the Lord!

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Deuteronomy 31:6

John and Dolores were on the trip with us. What a precious couple. They inspired us with their energy and tenacity: they are in their 80’s and they went everywhere we did to love and support the Guatemalan students. They believe in the program to help create opportunities for young people and their families.

Dolores was glad to share her own story with the students. She had many obstacles to overcome in her life, growing up on the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver and experiencing many personal troubles in her family. This resonated with the English House students because their stories are similar. One might think there is no way to overcome these negative experiences, setbacks, and obstacles.

Dolores shared with the kids that when she would face tough times, she would write a song. Then she proceeded to teach the song to the students:

Keep on Keeping On

You’ve got to keep on keeping on
You’ve got to keep on keeping on
You’ve got to have faith in God
And keep on keeping on

When troubles come my way
I will rise up and I will say
My faith’s in God
I’ll carry on
And he’ll guide me all the way

What an amazing connection. A Canadian senior finds that her personal struggles in life relate to teenagers who grow up in Mayan villages in the hills of Guatemala. It turns out her song is good encouragement for us too.  Everyone needs to Keep on Keeping On when the struggles of life rise up.

The Lord wants us to be strong and courageous in the face of adversity, not because of ourselves, but because of his presence and power within us. With God, all things are possible. We need to keep on keeping on in faith and trust in the Lord!

Amen.
