On Purpose, On Mission

God has a purpose for us. And if we ask him, God will tell us that the follower of Jesus is to love God completely and then love others. Then we are to put that love into action, coming alongside people to help them receive the love and grace God has for them…

36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Matthew 22:36-40

19 “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:19-20

Dear Little Bean,

As you come into this world, I want you to know that God has a purpose for you. There will be many people who also have a purpose and a plan for your life. The most important purpose is God’s purpose. He brought you into this world on purpose.

Sometimes people think that babies can be accidents because they were not planned by their parents. The God who made the universe and knit every little baby together inside a Mom does not have accidents. God does not have unplanned pregnancies. This can be very difficult for people to understand if the circumstances in the Mom’s life are challenging. God brings babies into this world on purpose.

So for any baby who grows into a little girl or boy, we can look up and ask God, “What is your purpose, God?” And he has told us what our purpose is:

First and foremost, overshadowing the mission of God for his followers are the commands of God. The follower of Jesus is to love God completely and then love others. Our purpose and mission happens within the context of God’s commands.

God’s mission for us is in the same spirit as the mission of Jesus: we are to go into the world and share God’s love and grace with others. Help them to understand and embrace it. That’s discipling: coming alongside people to help them receive the love and grace God has for them.

Little bean, you will have people around you who will live this call toward and into your life. Many people. The question is, little bean, will you be willing to do the same for others? Will you look at the world with God’s love and go into it to share his grace? I hope you will. It’s your mission!

Love Papa.
