1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”
4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.
6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”
8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.
Alarmed. Trembling. Bewildered. Afraid. Mary, Mary, and Salome came to honour Jesus in his burial with spices with which they would anoint his body. Their emotions were already high and they encountered this angel in the open tomb.
He told them not to be alarmed, yet who wouldn’t be? Who wouldn’t be trembling? Who wouldn’t be afraid? The tomb of your leader and prophet and king is empty. He is gone.
And the story this young man is telling you is out of this world: “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen!” How could this be?
The angel told them to go tell the rest of his followers. And he promised them that Jesus was going ahead of them to Galilee, where they would see him alive. How could this be?
The story of the resurrection is bewildering. It is far-fetched and hard to believe. Even his closest followers felt the same thing. Until they encountered Jesus alive. He is risen!
As long as we stand far off from the Christian faith we will be bewildered by the story of the resurrection. It is only when we interact with the risen Saviour ourselves that we can move from bewilderment to full faith.
This requires a step forward. Step closer in faith to explore the resurrection of Jesus. Explore the promises he made and the prophecies of old which are fulfilled in Jesus and his resurrection. There we will all find the hope of heaven and eternal life in the one who lived and died and rose again for us.
He is risen!
