Wait For The Power

Wait for the power. What power? The Holy Spirit power. We don’t have Jesus with us in the world anymore. We have Jesus in us through the Holy Spirit, who clothes us in power. If you are serving God in any capacity on earth, you need to be empowered by the Spirit!

46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
Luke 24:46-53

When Jesus, resurrected from the dead, was about to ascend to heaven, he had final words of instruction for his disciples. Jesus had just appeared to them several times and had been proving his resurrection to them through his physical body (he showed them his hands and feet with his crucifixion scars) and functions (he ate with them).

He knew that their excitement for his resurrection and the mission of being his witnesses would propel them into action. And therefore, before he ascended, he instructed them to wait in the city. Don’t go out and tell the world about my resurrection. Stay here until you have been clothed with power from on high.

This command from Jesus to his followers is, perhaps, one of the most important instructions he ever gave them. Wait for the power. What power?

The Holy Spirit power.

If you read the first few chapters of the Book of Acts, you can see how the Holy Spirit came to indwell the believers in Jerusalem. Every believer in Jesus Christ since then has been indwelled permanently by the Holy Spirit.

We don’t have Jesus with us in the world anymore. We have Jesus in us through the Holy Spirit, who clothes us in power.

If you have a mission, you need the Spirit. We don’t want to be going out to serve God without the power of the Spirit burning within us. Then it would be all us working under our own steam. The Holy Spirit is our power and our guide and our comforter and counsellor.

Jesus promised him to us and we need the Holy Spirit to fulfill the mission God has given us!

Amen.
