Light Brings Life

The truth Jesus brought into the world was the true essence of God. No one had seen God, yet Jesus, who is God, made him known. To those who receive him he gives the right to become children of God. The spiritual and heavenly life within him can be within us…

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
John 1:1-5, 9-14, 16-18

Jesus came into the world as the true light, shining into darkness. The light in Jesus is his life. In him was life. Not the life we have. Not physical, human life. We all have that life. The life that Jesus had was different life. It was so different that it could be a light to all mankind.

What kind of life would be like that, shining into darkness and drawing people to itself?

Jesus brought spiritual life into the world. He brought the glory of God into the world. These aspects of his life were unlike any other life around. People thought John the Baptist was special, and then they encountered Jesus. Full of grace and truth. The fullness of God in bodily form.

There was recognition that he was different, yet still we see that the world didn’t recognize him for who he was. Even though he made the world, the world didn’t recognize him. His own tribe, into whom he was born, did not receive him.

His message was new and different. Law had come through Moses, while grace and truth came through Jesus. That’s not to say Moses was not true. The truth Jesus brought into the world was the true essence of God. No one had seen God, yet Jesus, who is God, made him known. That life. When the life of God comes into the world, it shines brightly into the darkness.

Many will not receive him, still to this day. As we find out in John 3, people love the darkness in which they live. They shy away from light which exposes and challenges and calls them into account.

To those who do receive him, however, we have the right to become children of God. The spiritual and heavenly life within him can be within us. So receive him into your life. Receive the light that brings new life into the world: Jesus

Amen.
