Light of Life

The light of life is the light that emerges and projects from the life that is in Jesus. This life is spiritual life. The presence of the Holy Spirit in Jesus and in us illuminates into the darkness of the world. We never need to walk in darkness with Jesus in our lives…

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12

Jesus had just finished telling the crowds that he is the bread of life. The next time he appeared before them, he said, “I am the light of the world.” Let’s shed some light on his words…

When we follow Jesus, he gives us the light of life. John’s first chapter starts with, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it,” (John 1:4-5). This is comforting.

The light of life is the light that emerges and projects from the life that is in Jesus. We know from our studies of Jesus’ teaching in John’s gospel that this life is spiritual life. The presence of the Holy Spirit in Jesus and in us illuminates into the darkness of the world. We never need to walk in darkness with Jesus in our lives.

You might have been tempted to read this as saying that when we follow Jesus we won’t walk down dark paths or away from him… that inherent to following him is immunity from the darkness of sin attracting us. Wishful thinking. We definitely have the ability to resist temptation in the power of Christ, yet the darkness of the world will still attract us and tempt us and trip us up.

Even while that pressure exists, though, we have the light of Jesus’ life projecting on our path to see where we are going. We can see temptation for what it is. We have spiritual eyes to understand God’s way as contrasted to the world’s way.

This means that we are also more accountable in terms of the decisions we make. We don’t have a hope of claiming innocence. God’s light shines into darkness exposing it for what it is. We are without excuse. So embrace the light of life. Stay on God’s path. Identify dark places and flee from them.

The light of world is with you…

Amen.
