Look Up To The Maker

As our Maker, God knows the trials we face. He knows the world in which we live. He created it. He watches over us in all things, so look to him. Lift your eyes up to him. Rely on him for help in this crazy world of life, death, joy, and storms. Our Maker cares for us.

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
Psalm 121:1-8

I am preparing to lead worship for a memorial service on the weekend. So when I saw this Psalm pop up before me it resonated with my frame of mind toward those who need comfort and strength in tough times. Where does our help come from? From the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth.

Maker. God is our maker. In the context of trials and loss and the challenges of life, Maker is an important identity of God. As the author of our life, God has not walked away from his responsibility in relation to his creation. He never sleeps. He is always on the job.

Now, it’s a bit of a rub for God to promise that he will keep us from harm even as we confront the end of life or even storms of life. I don’t want to spiritualize things, er.. oh, yes I do. Maybe not over-spiritualize, yet to accurately spiritualize things, God protects us spiritually.

Physically, he has made us to be born, to live, and to die. He has also created us to have free will and to live alongside others with free will. Hence the storms of life we cause together in this world.

As Maker, he knew these things. He created these things. He watches over us in the context of these things. So look to him. Lift your eyes up to him. Rely upon him for help in this crazy world of life, death, joy, and storms.

He is our Maker and he cares for us…

Amen.
