Our love and good deeds and fellowship matter more and more the closer we get to Jesus coming. Our world needs our love and God’s love more and more as that Day approaches. So let’s consider how to spur each other on in faith and add to that – love and good deeds.
22 Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
When we have other followers of Jesus around us we can follow him more fully. Pastor Wes challenged us with this truth last Sunday. And we should want to follow Jesus more fully. He is our King of kings and Lord of lords.
We have been given the honour and privilege to draw near to God in full assurance of faith because of Jesus. As we do that, life goes on. And when life goes on, there are things which will test and strain our hold on the hope we have.
Whether it is sin or worry or other concern that entangles and interferes with our hold on our hope, the challenge will come. So hold unswervingly. Without swerving, hold to the hope of Jesus.
How do we do that? In community. Consider how to spur each other on in faith and add to that love and good deeds. Don’t we need that encouragement? I do. We raise the bar for each other in community. Add I have been reminded recently, iron sharpens iron and so we sharpen each other.
Notice that a fundamental element to community and to spurring each other on is meeting together. God says don’t give it up. Keep meeting so you can keep spurring. And being spurred. Finally, we see that this happens in the context of the Day approaching. The fact that eternity is on our doorstep matters to our discipleship.
