Calling Attention ~ Llamando La Atencion

When we are intent on simply being God’s child we are not attempting to be the star of the show. There is already a star. Jesus. And that star demonstrated for us the way of a servant of the Father. May our behaviour in front of the world call people to the Lord. Not to us…

1 Cuídense de no hacer sus obras de justicia delante de la gente para llamar la atención.
Mateo 6:1

1 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Matthew 6:1-6

I love how the Spanish translates verse 1: “in order to call for attention…” That’s what some people do. They call for attention. They do it in their righteousness. They do it in their prayer. They do it in their giving. They want other people to see their Christian actions. They look good.

When we showboat in front of other people, we displease God. Jesus says here that we have our reward from God in full (verse 2). Hope that’s enough for you. There may be much human praise and admiration that stacks up when you show your piety, but you’re done with God. He isn’t going to reward it.

Jesus’ teaching is to follow a better way. Give quietly. Pray quietly. Be righteous without showcasing it. That’s what God will reward.

This is all part of the emphasis on being God’s person. Be his servant and follower. Notice that when we are intent on being God’s child we are not attempting to be the star of the show. There is already a star. Jesus. And that star demonstrated for us the way of a servant of the Father.

Don’t call for attention in your Christianity. Follow Jesus. May our behaviour in front of the world call people to the Lord. May they be attracted to God first and foremost and always.

Amen.
