God has placed the parts in the body just as he wanted them to be. And so we all belong. Every person is valuable. Every person is needed. Every person belongs. And when we take up the service God calls and equips us to, we fulfill our calling as the Body of Christ…
1 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
1Corinthians 12:1, 4-7, 11-14, 18-20
Not to be self-consumed but to be others-focused… That’s what it means to serve. And God promises to equip those he calls into service. He does this through the grace of the Holy Spirit. We have been studying in our church these last week’s about our community and how we are to live in community together.
One of the most important factors in our ability to thrive together as a church is the gifting of our people to serve in the power of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit gifts us and equips us.
Why does the Spirit do this? Well, it is for the common good (vs. 7) that the Spirit gives gifts. They are manifestations of the Holy Spirit in us. And they are distributed to each person in the Body of Christ as the Spirit determines. He knows what is best. The Spirit knows what is best for the church.
We see that the many parts of the body make up one unified body, which is the Body of Christ (vs. 12). And Paul goes into great detail to underscore the point that we are all different and we all need each other.
We see in verse 18 that God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. And so we all belong.
Sometimes people can get a superiority complex about their gifting as contrasted to other people’s gifts. We all belong. Every person has value in the body.
This goes so well with our reflection yesterday about having mercy toward people toward whom the world might look down. Every person is valuable. Every person is needed. Every person belongs.
And the Holy Spirit gifts us to serve in the area we are called to serve. Together, when we take up the service God calls and equips us to, we fulfill our calling as the Body of Christ.
