Find Rest

Find rest. The path to finding rest is the path of learning from Jesus, who will reveal God to us if we can take up gentleness and humility. So cast off your wisdom and arrogance. Come to Jesus, all you who are weary and burdened. He is calling you…

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:25-30

Jesus gives us some insight into how God works here: he hides things from those who are wise and learned, and he reveals them to little children. God hides things from those who, in the world’s eyes, and in their own eyes, are wise. He then reveals things to those who are humble and unassuming, like children.

The wise and learned might not care. They think they know already. They also may think they don’t need God. Amazing what happens when one is in need and desperate for help. Their minds open up to receive…

Jesus goes on. The Father is known by the Son, Jesus, and anyone Jesus reveals him to. This is important truth for those who consider themselves in the wise camp. It’s not only insight or assistance you might miss. By being arrogant, we might miss knowing God himself.

It is within this context of considering our posture before God that Jesus invites us to him. The invitation is to those who are weary and burdened. He doesn’t invite the wise or learned or even the little children. Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come. Who is that?

It’s you and me. It is the humble and needy and wise and learned. Everyone is weary and burdened. We all know in our hearts that we need rest and rejuvenation. Today more than ever.

What would happen if we learned from Jesus, as he offers? Is there a chance the one who is gentle and humble in heart could teach us to be like him? Then we could be like those little children to whom he reveals himself. That would be an amazing lesson.

The path to finding rest is the path of learning from Jesus. As we take on a posture of gentleness and humility, the Father will be revealed to us. The revelation of God will bring rest for our souls. Why?

Because God loves us. Because God wants to rejuvenate us with hope. Because he sent his Son to be our Saviour.

Cast off your wisdom and arrogance. Come to Jesus, all you who are weary and burdened.

Find rest.

Amen.
