When we put ourselves ahead of others, we make wrong choices. The mind of Christ, in contrast to our selfishness, is to value others above ourselves. Now, more than ever, we need to follow Jesus in serving and loving our neighbours, family, and friends…
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
I’m back here. This idea of caring for us instead of me is front of mind. The Spring Break news footage of obnoxious college dude saying, “I’m not going to let it stop me…if I get it I get it,” is ringing in my ears.
When we put ourselves ahead of others, we make wrong choices. In the COVID-19 world, the words of the Apostle Paul are even more important: Value others above yourselves.
As followers of Jesus, we should be used to this, yet when reducing spread of a virus cramps our style, we push back. We let our kids continue to play in the cul de sac. We still shake hands on the golf course. We hang out with our friends and get too close.
Some of us underestimate the risk of us being carriers who infect the older adults or vulnerable people in our lives and churches. Just because I can get through a case of COVID-19 doesn’t mean my elder relative can.
My decisions impact other people. More than ever. And so, as I consider my comings and goings, every decision I make should reflect my love for other people.
This is the mind of Christ.
