Mighty God

What will you do with Mighty God Jesus? What will you do with the revelation that he is more than good teacher or good shepherd? He is more than baby in the manger. From the beginning of time for eternity into the future, Jesus is our Mighty God…

1 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1

But about the Son he says,
“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.”
Hebrews 1:8

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
Revelation 1:8

The child, Jesus, will be called Mighty God.  Jesus is our Mighty God. There are still many people, though, who do not understand or believe that Jesus is God. They don’t believe that the Bible teaches this. They view Jesus as a teacher or a prophet. Jesus is a good man to them, yet he is not the God Man in their eyes.

Isaiah says that before Jesus was born – more than 700 years before – he was to be Mighty God. How could this be? What does this mean? Well, it is consistent with the rest of Scripture in its teaching. John identifies that Jesus is God from before creation: in the beginning, the Word (who became flesh in John 1:14) was with God and was God.

In Colossians 1:16, Paul shares that Jesus was the creator of all things. As we reflect on our Maker, which even those who may not be able to define God often do, consider that the Bible teaches us that Jesus is our Maker. Jesus is creator. Jesus is the Creator God. The Mighty God. We see in Hebrews 1 that the Father addresses the Son as God. We see in Revelation 1:8 & 17 that Jesus self-identifies as the Alpha and Omega, the First and Last.

What will you do with Mighty God Jesus? What will you do with the revelation that he is more than good teacher or good shepherd? He is more than baby in the manger. He won’t be relegated to feel-good teacher status. We can try to keep him in the wings and on the sidelines, yet he won’t stay there.

Jesus’ destiny in the incarnation was to be recognized for who he is from eternity past to eternity future. Our Mighty God came to earth. As we worship him we are worshiping the Creator and Sustainer of all things.

Come let us adore him.
