Hear The Son, Believe The Father

Jesus was entrusted on earth with every attribute and function we would think is God’s. That’s because Jesus is God. When God comes to earth in the form of humanity, he brings the authority of heaven with him, working miracles and sharing the words of eternal life…

16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.
John 5:16-25 NIV

When the religious leaders attacked Jesus for healing the man on the Sabbath, he explained to them that he was acting with and after the example of the Father. What?!? The Father breaks the Sabbath? How could this be?

He went further to say that Jesus the Son only does things which he sees God the Father doing. The works of displayed by the Father including the work of Jesus, are amazing and also just the start. They would see even greater things to come. This must have made the religious leaders squirrely.

The underlying truth here is that Jesus was entrusted on earth with every attribute and function we would think is God’s. That’s because Jesus is God. When God comes to earth in the form of humanity, he brings the authority of heaven with him. This applies to miracles and healing, the law, and the giving of eternal life. Even Judgment is entrusted to Jesus the Son of God.

We also see that Jesus and the Father are one here. They are one in action, one in honour, and one in judgment. For if a person dishonours and disbelieves Jesus on earth, they are seen as dishonouring the Father in heaven. Can I call for the question?

If any of Jesus’ teaching here gives you heartburn, his promise in verse 24 will not make sense. Jesus says, “Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.” The offer of eternal life is right before us for anyone who will hear what Jesus says and believe the Father who sent him.

Consistent with everything else he has said, Jesus connects his own words and deeds with believing the Father in heaven. When people who are spiritually dead, like I was, hear the words of Jesus and believe the Father, they live. They truly live.

Once I was spiritually dead and searching. Then I met Jesus and now I truly live. This abundant and eternal life is available to all. Jesus is calling you just as he called me…

Amen.

  1. Your beginning is very good, but suddenly you make a twist! You write “Jesus was entrusted on earth with every attribute and function we would think is God’s. That’s because Jesus is God.” When Jesus is God there is no reason for God to authorise him because authorisation belongs to God and when Jesus would be God then he is eternal and can not die and as such would have never been afraid to die. By making Jesus God you are minimalising the act of Jesus, who gave his life for the sins of all, whilst he trusted his heavenly Father, to Whom he one moment asked why He had abandoned him. When Jesus is God there is no reason to pray to himself (except when he is schizophrenic) and a person can not abandon himself or leave himself split from himself. You also make Jesus and God into liars, because Scripture tells us that God is an eternal Spirit Being no one can see and live, whilst Jesus was seen by many. Jesus also said he did not know certain things, though God knows everything. When Jesus is God he lied about such very important things like when he would return and about the Last days.

Thanks Christa, for the comment. I think we might be reading different verses, however. The verses I have excerpted above specifically deal with the opinion you hold. Verse 18 helps those who hold a view that Jesus isn’t God or didn’t claim to be God. His accusers target him for blasphemy because he made himself equal with God. This was Jesus’ claim. It is not my claim on his behalf.

Furthermore, verse 22 specifically says that the Father entrusted judgment to the Son. So if you would like to debate whether Jesus was entrusted or not, perhaps you should talk to him. I’m just repeated what he said. Hope this is helpful.
